school, and for our cars comes from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. Most of our fossil fuel supply was created millions of years ago\u2014much of it even before the dinosaurs were here. The earth has only a limited amount of these fuels, and humans are using them up very fast. By saving energy, we can slow down the use of fossil fuels and make our supplies last longer.<\/p>\n<p>Saving energy conserves other resources as well. It takes a tremendous amount of natural resources (like water, land, wood, and other building materials) to build a power plant. Saving energy delays the need for new <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-1\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-1\" data-container=\"popover-1\" data-content=\"A place where electricity is generated and sent over wires to where it is used.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Power Plant\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>power plants<\/strong><\/span> and postpones the use of these resources.<\/p>\n<h3>You Can Help<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use energy efficiently at home, at school, and for transportation. Simple things like carpooling and turning off the lights when you leave the room can make a big difference, if we all pitch in.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about and use energy from <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-2\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-2\" data-container=\"popover-2\" data-content=\"Fuels that can be easily made or \u201crenewed.\u201d We can never use up renewable fuels. Types of renewable fuels are solar power, wind power, and hydropower.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Renewable Resources\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>renewable resources<\/strong><\/span>. Renewable energy is energy that doesn&#8217;t get used up the way fossil fuels do. Renewable energy sources are sometimes called &#8220;green power&#8221; because they help keep our planet healthy. Carbon dioxide is exhaled by humans and animals and is absorbed by green growing things and by the sea.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Carbon Dioxide\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>carbon dioxide<\/strong><\/span> is released. Carbon dioxide is one of the gases that causes the <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-5\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-5\" data-container=\"popover-5\" data-html-content=\"The rise in temperature that the earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere absorb and radiate heat from the sun. This process occurs naturally and has kept the earth&#039;s temperature about 59\u00b0F warmer than it would otherwise be. These gases act like a thin film that absorbs and traps heat from the sun inside our <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-6\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-6\" data-container=\"popover-6\" data-content=\"The layer of gases that surrounds the earth.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Atmosphere\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>atmosphere<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>People&#8217;s activities (such as burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation) have increased the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. As a result, the earth&#8217;s temperature is rising. This is known as <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-7\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-7\" data-container=\"popover-7\" data-html-content=\"An increase in the earth&#039;s temperature caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels for energy. Burning these fuels releases carbon dioxide and other gases that make the earth&#039;s natural greenhouse effect much stronger, trapping more of the sun&#039;s heat in our atmosphere. Global warming is causing glaciers to melt and is changing sea levels and weather patterns.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Global Warming\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>global warming<\/strong><\/span>. (Some scientists prefer the term <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-8\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-8\" data-container=\"popover-8\" data-html-content=\"Changes in temperature, rainfall, wind, and other aspects of the earth&#039;s climate that last for an extended period. \" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Climate Change\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>climate change<\/strong><\/span> because in addition to higher temperatures, the earth is experiencing other changes such as new weather patterns like droughts and floods.)<\/p>\n<p>Producing, transporting, and using fossil fuels and other forms of energy can also contribute harmful pollutants into our <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-9\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-9\" data-container=\"popover-9\" data-content=\"All the natural and living things around us.
